The Lunchbox Fund is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing a daily meal for orphaned and vulnerable school children in township and rural areas of South Africa, a country where 65% of all children live in poverty. Receiving food encourages these children to stay in school and obtain their education.
Capitalizing on the trend of taking food photos with smartphones and sharing them via social networks, an app called Feedie was developed. The app transforms food photos into actual food – donations coming from participating restaurants -- for South African schoolchildren.
The Ferguson Foundation’s contribution to the Lunchbox Fund went directly to expanding the reach of the Feedie app specifically, developing the Android version. Android powered smartphones account for 80% of the smartphone market, which statistically speaking should increase the already 12MM meals generated by the Feedie app by 80%.
The Feedie app is a perfect example of the Foundation's mission to support charitable “engines” that generate recurring value over time.
